A gem in Littleton. Personalized helpful service with fantastic meat, produce and seafood. Not to mention the best muffins around. Many prices are competitive with the big box stores. I have been a long time customer and it is so important to support our local businesses such as this one.
They sell normal groceries for a premium, I'm not sure why. They position themselves like a Roche Brothers or a Whole Foods, but they're not. Organic produce is scarce, but their normal produce costs as much. The best thing is their bakery - fantastic muffins.
Average quality, high prices. Do you like you produce from Chile? This supermarket, like most north of Boston, is low on local, low on freshness, and yet high on prices. I guess paying higher prices makes the consumer thinks the quality if better? Wish I lived in an area that cared more about freshness and interesting selections. Not recommended unless you, like me, have no other choice.
Where on God's green earth are most of these reviewers from? - Mars?? Donelan's is a small, privately-owned company. Last I knew, they had four stores...but that was in the early 1980s, when Victory Markets were still around and Searstown Mall in Leominster was a going concern. Donelan's stores in Littleton and Acton were two of my accounts when I worked in food retail sales. I even dated a gal from the Acton store (Hi, Pam!) and was invited to one of their Christmas parties. A friendlier group of people, you couldn't meet/
Let me start by saying I love supporting local as I work for a local business but this location has been on a continuous downward spiral since Market Basket came into town but let's not mistake this for blaming the competition but want to shed light on my belief that there are two types of businesses, the one that takes competition as a challenge to improve themselves and show off their finest qualities then there is the other type of business who blames competition for their down falls, their short comings; Donelan's is currently the latter company. The staff has always been pretty good, the donuts and muffins are always really good but the hot food has been boring an mundane and seems to constantly be on a rotation day to day, never exciting or new. The morning is hit or miss in their sandwiches whether they are hard as a rock or cooked to perfection. The store seems under maintained and dirty half the time, essentially they aren't working to stay in business and quite frankly I am concerned about them. I hope the Donelan's get it together soon,
I found the Donelan's stores well-run and fairly-priced. No they didn't have the buying power of a major chain, so their prices were a bit higher. They never claimed to be a Whole Foods-wannabe nor an organic market, so all you yuppies - get over yourselves. If that's what you want, go to Whole Foods. Otherwise, relax and go grocery shopping. Frankly, I found Donelan's stores to be the more pleasant of my accounts and never hesitated to do my weekly shopping there.
